Role of girl students
in the socio-economic surveys of any village
Sourav Chakraborty(3rd semester)
In
the context of rural development there are many common questions asked by
different individuals about the involvement of girls’ students i.e. how they
can work in the adverse conditions of village? How they can live in a place
where there is no toilet facilities? How they can interact with unknown
villagers? Well I also thought this type of questions and ultimately concluded
that girls really do not have any impact on the socio economic surveys of
villages. But then I met the girl students of Rama Krishna Mission Vivekananda
University, and my perception changed by leaps and bounds.
Representation of the total village
population
It
is a quite known fact to all of us that a village population consist of more or
less equal proposition of men and women. Actually when we boys approach a
particular household then the male members come forward to answer our
Questions. So practically the answers of the female members goes ultimately
unanswered. But when girls approach any family the female members also come forward
to participate in the survey thus leading to the representation of the total
village population.
Effective questions
Until
I got enrolled in the ARTD course I always felt proud about my knowledge in
science and mathematics and hardly felt any shame for my literature marks.
Whereas it is quite evident that our female counterparts timidly solved
numerical but they carried a huge library of Hindi and Bengali novels in their
bags. But when we visited village for the first time then I really felt the
need to have a good literary background. Most of us couldn’t put forward good
set of effective questions and here also the girls exceeded us by providing
really functional questions which the villagers easily understood and answered.
Quick wit to change the course of
discussion
Girls
are known for their quick wit in their everyday works. The villagers don’t have
the opportunity to pursue quality education and so it is a common phenomenon
that they take up our questions of survey in a wrong way. They think that the
survey which we undertake is not in the good interest for them. Here also girls
rescue us through their quick wit. Through their clever questions they can
easily can easily change the mind makeup of the villagers more effectively than
us.
Extracting
the exact information
The
real needs of the girls are felt during the survey of Health Status of Women
and children in a village. It is quite evident that the village women are very
conservative and they do not disclose any health related problems before the young
boys. But with the girls they feel free and their health status are easily
recorded in the survey schedules.
I am not dedicating
this article to any of my senior or junior sisters or my classmates. I am
dedicating this article to all those living encyclopaedias, who think that
women are born to look after family and kids and they can never exceed men in
any respect.
