Gandhiji’s
role in rural development
·
In
the Indian context rural development may be defined as maximizing production in
agriculture and allied activities in rural areas including development of rural
industries.
·
Provision
of certain basic amenities like drinking water, electricity especially for the
productive purpose, link roads connecting village to market centers, hospitals,
schools etc.
·
According
to Gandhiji’s approach to rural development may be labeled as ‘idealist’.
·
Basically
it attaches supreme importance to moral value.
·
Gandhiji
pointed out, “If the village perishes India will perish too”.
·
According
to him if the central authority emphasizes on different village republic and
supervises the common interest like education, industries, health care centre,
banking etc. then changes in the Rural Development is positive.
·
Gandhiji
firmly believed that village republics can be built only through social and
political power.
·
All
conflicts and disputes should be solved within the village.
·
A
non violent brigade of volunteers would be organized to defend the village.
·
According
to him village should be self sufficient and could fulfill all the basic needs
like food, clothing, shelter are concerned.
·
Some
lands should earmark for cattle and playgrounds for adults and children.
·
According
to Gandhiji each man must do physical labor to earn his bread. As because
physical labor is very necessary for moral discipline and for sound development
of mind.
·
In
this respect he was highly influenced by Ruskin and Tolstoy.
·
Gandhiji
said industrialization leads to passive and active exploitation of village.
·
In
a country like India, where millions labors in the village do not get work for
even 6 months in a year, industrialization will not only increase unemployment
but force labors to migrate to urban areas. This will ruin villages.
·
Gandhiji
emphasized the principle of true ship in social and economic affairs.
·
Gandhiji’s
concept of development is oriented to uplift the common man.
·
Gandhiji’s
approach to rural development strives in reconstructing village republics which
would be non violent, self governed and self sufficient. So far as the basic
necessities of ruralities are concerned.
