Gandhiji’s role in rural development
·        In the Indian context rural development may be defined as maximizing production in agriculture and allied activities in rural areas including development of rural industries.
·        Provision of certain basic amenities like drinking water, electricity especially for the productive purpose, link roads connecting village to market centers, hospitals, schools etc.
·        According to Gandhiji’s approach to rural development may be labeled as ‘idealist’.
·        Basically it attaches supreme importance to moral value.
·        Gandhiji pointed out, “If the village perishes India will perish too”.
·        According to him if the central authority emphasizes on different village republic and supervises the common interest like education, industries, health care centre, banking etc. then changes in the Rural Development is positive.
·        Gandhiji firmly believed that village republics can be built only through social and political power.
·        All conflicts and disputes should be solved within the village.
·        A non violent brigade of volunteers would be organized to defend the village.
·        According to him village should be self sufficient and could fulfill all the basic needs like food, clothing, shelter are concerned.
·        Some lands should earmark for cattle and playgrounds for adults and children.
·        According to Gandhiji each man must do physical labor to earn his bread. As because physical labor is very necessary for moral discipline and for sound development of mind.
·        In this respect he was highly influenced by Ruskin and Tolstoy.
·        Gandhiji said industrialization leads to passive and active exploitation of village.
·        In a country like India, where millions labors in the village do not get work for even 6 months in a year, industrialization will not only increase unemployment but force labors to migrate to urban areas. This will ruin villages.
·        Gandhiji emphasized the principle of true ship in social and economic affairs.
·        Gandhiji’s concept of development is oriented to uplift the common man.
·        Gandhiji’s approach to rural development strives in reconstructing village republics which would be non violent, self governed and self sufficient. So far as the basic necessities of ruralities are concerned.
